칼끝의 서정 - 옥승철 목판화전

운심석면 갤러리에서 2025년 두번째 전시로 옥승철 작가를 초대했습니다. 홍익대학교에서 판화를 전공하고 중국미술학원 목판화 진수 과정을 수료한 옥승철 작가는 대한민국미술대전 우수상을 수상하며 실력을 인정받은 작가입니다.

작가는 목판화로 자연과 유년 시절, 고향처럼 우리가 상실한 것들을 되불러오는 작업을 합니다. 작가 특유의 기법으로 만들어진 그의 작품은 회화적이면서도 섬세하고 촉각적인 느낌을 선사하며, 보는 이로 하여금 상실된 것에 대한 그리움을 불러일으킵니다.

이번 전시를 통해 작가는 실재하면서도 동시에 실재하지 않는 풍경을 선보입니다. 이는 지금의 풍경을 통해 ‘그때 그곳’의 풍경을 되살리고, 상실된 것들을 완전하게 하고자 하는 예술가의 마음을 담고 있습니다.

• 전시 기간 중 매주 토요일 오후 3시 옥승철 작가와의 대화 시간이 있습니다. 

나무에서 종이로 번지는 풍경, 그사이

날선 조각도로 나무를 파내고 또 파낸다. 날카로운 칼날을 받아내는

너무 무르지도 딱딱하지도 않은 나무의 물성에서 자연의 순리를 느낀다.

칼끝이 그려내는 반복의 시간.

나무에서 종이로 풍경이 번져가는 기다림의 시간

천천히 스며들고 중첩되는 풍경 속에서 의연한 생명력을 느낀다.

나무판 위에서 끊임없이 움직이는 날카로운 칼끝이 삶의 무늬를 그려내는 동안

저절로 마음이 정화가 되고, 새로운 작업으로 나아가는 에너지가 충전되곤 한다.

단절시키고 멈추게 하는 칼끝이 아니라 비움으로써 드러내게 하는 역설적인

서정성을 담아내는 것이 오랫동안 천착해온 작업의 방향이다.

페인팅의 덧칠은 중첩되고 쌓아가면서 밀도를 만들지만, 목판은 파내고 덜어냄으로써

깊이를 만든다. 나무위에 새겨진 밀도와 깊이는 켜켜이 쌓여온 시간과 자연에 기대 살아온

응축된 삶의 이야기들이다.

보통의 회화작업은 처음부터 끝까지 물 흐르듯 전 과정을 지켜보며 덧칠을 하지만

목판은 한치의 오차도 허락하지 않는 치밀한 계산을 통해 판을 파고 잉킹을 하고

찍어내기 전까지는 완성된 결과물을 볼 수 없다.

무수한 칼끝이 지나가는 몰입의 시간,

그 지난한 과정을 견딜 수 있는 원동력은 마지막에 상상하던 결과물을 단박에,

바로 눈앞에서 목도하는 희열 때문이다.

치밀한 계산과 합체의 우연이 만들어낸 특별함이 거기 있다.

시나브로 스며들면서 칼끝이 만들어내는 이미지는 그때 그곳, 잃어버린 것들에 대한

반추이자 오늘을 살아가게 하는 힘이다.

칼끝이 전하는 온기, 마음의 무늬를 새긴다.

Woodblock Prints by Oak Seung-cheol: Yearning for That Time and Place

Woonsim Gallery is pleased to present a special summer exhibition featuring artist Ok Seung-cheol. Ok Seung-cheol, who majored in printmaking at Hongik University and completed an advanced woodblock printmaking course at China Academy of Art, is a highly acclaimed artist who won the Excellence Award at the Korea Art Exhibition.

Through his woodblock prints, the artist works to bring back things we have lost, such as nature, childhood, and our hometowns. Using his unique techniques, his works are painterly, delicate, and tactile, evoking a sense of longing for what has been lost.

In this exhibition, the artist presents landscapes that are both real and unreal at the same time. His work captures the essence of an artist's desire to revive the landscapes of "that time and place" through current scenes, making what has been lost feel whole again.

Scenery Spreading from Wood to Paper, and the Space Between

With a sharp carving tool, I carve into the wood, over and over again. In the physical nature of the wood—neither too soft nor too hard—that accepts the sharp blade, I feel the natural order of things. This is a time of repetition created by the carving tool.

It is a time of waiting for the scenery to spread from the wood to the paper. In the slowly seeping and overlapping scenery, I feel a resilient vitality. While the sharp blade ceaselessly moves across the woodblock, drawing the patterns of life, my mind is naturally purified, and my energy is recharged for new work. The long-standing direction of my work has been to capture a paradoxical lyricism that reveals by emptying, rather than a blade that disconnects and stops.

While the layering of paint in a painting creates density, a woodblock print creates depth by carving out and removing material. The density and depth carved into the wood are the condensed stories of a life built on layered time and reliance on nature.

Unlike typical painting, where the process can be watched as it flows from start to finish with continuous layering, a woodblock print requires meticulous calculation that allows for no error. You cannot see the finished result until you have carved the block, inked it, and printed it.

The driving force that allows me to endure the arduous process of countless hours of focused carving is the exhilaration of finally witnessing the imagined result instantly, right before my eyes. Therein lies the special quality created by the combination of meticulous calculation and accidental harmony.

The image created by the seeping, slow-moving blade is a reflection on that time and place, on things that have been lost, and it is also the strength that allows me to live today. The warmth conveyed by the blade carves the patterns of the heart.
