운심석면 특별 기획전

2025년 첫 전시로 변시지 화백의 ‘제주풍경’을 택했습니다. 

운심석면 설립자 김용원 선생의 애장품인 100호 대작 두 점을 포함해 소장품 20여 점을 공개합니다.

1948년 일본 최고 권위의 광풍회 최고상을 최연소 수상한 변시지 화백(1926~2013)의 기록은 오늘까지도 깨어지지 않고 있습니다.  

일본 생활을 청산하고 1957년 귀국한 선생은 서울대학교 미술대학을 거쳐 1975년부터 제주도에 머물며 제주대학교에 재직했습니다. 44년 만에 귀향한 그가 오랜 방황과 고통 끝에 찾아낸 제주 빛깔이 향토색입니다. 그 황토색 바탕에 극도로 절제된 검은 선묘로 바다의 수평선, 태양, 멀리 몸에 잠길 듯 말듯 한 돛배 한 척, 바람, 파도, 돌담, 조랑말, 까마귀, 구부정한 노인 한사람 등이 그려졌습니다. 그렇게 ‘제주의 혼’이 되살아났습니다.

5.23~7.20 금·토·일 오후 1시~5시까지 개방 하며, 전시 기간 중 매주 토요일 3시에는 김용원 선생의 짧은 안내 설명 (‘내가 만난 변시지 화백’)이 있습니다.  

1층 전시장 입구도 김애영, 김원숙, 김종학, 클로드 비알라 작품으로 새롭게 단장 했습니다.

Special Exhibition

《Byun Si-Ji: Jeju Landscape》

May 23 (Fri) – July 20 (Sun), 2025

Every Friday, Saturday & Sunday, 1PM – 5PM

For our first exhibition in 2025, we have chosen “Jeju Landscape” by artist Byun Si-Ji. The exhibition will showcase over 20 works from our collection, including two large-scale masterpieces (size 100) cherished by Mr. Kim Yong-Won, the founder of Woonsim Gallery. 

The record of artist Byun Si-Ji (1926–2013), who became the youngest recipient of the highest honor from Japan’s prestigious Kōfūkai in 1948, remains unbroken to this day.

After closing his chapter in Japan, he returned to Korea in 1957 and, following a period at Seoul National University’s College of Fine Arts, settled in Jeju in 1975 to teach at Jeju National University.

Returning to his homeland after 44 years, the local colors of Jeju—discovered through years of wandering and suffering—became the unique essence of his work.

On the ochre-colored(natural earth pigment) background, the artist rendered with utmost restraint in black linework: the horizon of the sea, the sun, a solitary sailboat seemingly about to sink into the water, the wind, waves, stone walls, a pony, a crow, and a hunched old man. In this way, the “spirit of Jeju” was brought back to life.

The exhibition is open from May 23 to July 20, every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, from 1 PM to 5 PM.

During the exhibition period, a brief talk titled “My Encounter with Artist Byun Si-Ji” will be given every Saturday at 3 PM by Mr. Kim Yong-Won.

The entrance to the first-floor gallery has also been newly renovated, featuring works by Kim Ae-Young, Kim Won-Sook, Kim Jong-Hak, and Claude Viallat.
